Heavy thunderstorms over Accra on May 17, 2026, severely disrupted flight operations at Accra International Airport. Several inbound and outbound flights faced extended delays, holding patterns, and airborne circling due to poor visibility and unstable weather. This weather event significantly impacted both international and domestic air travel schedules.

Meteorological conditions showed active thunderstorm activity over the capital, with winds at 4 knots and temperatures around 26 degrees Celsius. This severe weather reduced visibility across Accra's airspace, impacting both landing and take-off operations for multiple airlines. Passengers on these affected flights experienced considerable inconvenience and extended travel times.

This disruption highlights the vulnerability of Ghana's aviation sector to adverse weather conditions, a recurring challenge during the country's rainy seasons. Such events can lead to direct financial losses for airlines through increased fuel consumption for circling, additional operational costs, and potential compensation for delayed passengers. Furthermore, they can damage Ghana's reputation as a reliable air travel hub, affecting tourism and business travel.

Collins Frimpong from MyJoyOnline News reported on the specific incidents. Kenya Airways flight KQ511 and South African Airways flight SA52 were placed in extended holding patterns over the Kpone Katamanso and Gulf of Guinea airspaces. These aircraft eventually landed safely at approximately 9:55 p.m. after prolonged delays. British Airways flight BA2066, scheduled to depart at 8:50 p.m., was delayed by 45 minutes, taking off at 9:35 p.m. due to temporary operational slowdowns.

Domestic carrier Africa World Airlines flight AW125 from Kumasi also experienced significant issues. The aircraft approached Accra, then returned to Kumasi as conditions worsened, a musician on board, Kweku Smoke, confirmed this on social media. Earlier, Emirates flight EK788 from Abidjan circled for an hour between Ningo Prampram and Battor. It landed at 6:06 p.m., over an hour behind its scheduled 4:43 p.m. arrival time.

Future adverse weather events could lead to more frequent and prolonged flight disruptions in Ghana. Airlines and airport authorities must consider implementing advanced weather monitoring systems and contingency plans to mitigate the impact of such events. This will ensure greater operational resilience and minimize financial losses and passenger inconvenience. The aviation sector will likely need to adjust schedules and allocate additional resources to manage these challenges effectively.
