Hundreds of residents in Gbetsile, Apolonia, and Kakasunanka are demanding urgent action from authorities. Their communities in the Kpone Katamanso Municipality of Greater Accra have suffered months of water shortages. The roads in these areas are also in very poor condition. Residents marched through the streets wearing red and black. They sang songs and carried placards to show their frustration.
The lack of clean water has deeply affected families. Many must now buy water from vendors. This is a costly solution. One resident reported paying GHS200 for a drum of water. This price is too high for most households. "Water is life, and we cannot continue to live like this," stated another resident. They are appealing to the Ghana Water Company Limited and local leaders.
This situation highlights ongoing infrastructure challenges in Ghana. Many growing communities struggle with basic services. Reliable water and good roads are essential for development. The government has aimed to improve infrastructure across the country. However, this protest shows that some areas are still being left behind. The lack of basic services can slow down economic activity. It also impacts the quality of life for citizens.
Mr Stephen Quarcoo, a resident, expressed anger at the delay in repairs. He stated that it should not take six months to fix a pipeline. "We are not interested in technical explanations. People are suffering," he said. He warned that this neglect could affect the upcoming elections. "If the MP does not come to our rescue, he will lose his seat."
The poor state of the roads is another major concern. They are described as dusty and damaged. These roads make transport difficult. Businesses are affected. Access to homes is challenging. This is especially true during the rainy season. Women and children are disproportionately affected. They often travel long distances to fetch water. The demonstrators plan to present a petition to the Ghana Water Company. They will also meet with their Member of Parliament and other officials.
The residents are calling for immediate water supply restoration. They also want improved road infrastructure. Long-term solutions for these growing communities are needed. The government must address these basic needs. Failure to do so could lead to further unrest. It could also impact political support. The demands highlight the importance of public services. These services are critical for the well-being of all citizens.
