Former President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated the modernisation project for the historic Asesewa Market. This initiative seeks to revive the market, established in 1935, which had experienced a decline in economic activity.

The redevelopment falls under the 24-Hour Market initiative. This programme aims to restore the market’s significance. Former President Mahama stated the market had lost its vibrancy due to insufficient infrastructure investment. Local traders from areas such as Ashaiman and Accra previously frequented the market.

The Asesewa Market holds special historical importance. It featured in Ghanaian educational books for decades. The market, however, saw its influence wane. A nearby market in Akateng, located near the Volta Lake, gained prominence instead. This project underscores a commitment to revitalising key economic hubs across Ghana.

Former President Mahama detailed significant infrastructure additions at the ground-breaking ceremony. The plan includes constructing 100 lockable stores and 150 open stores. Crucially, the market will feature a police station, a fire station, and a clinic. Support facilities like a day care centre, a pharmacy, and 10 warehouses are also planned. Additionally, the market will have two cold stores, a meat processing facility, and 36 washrooms. A Women's Development Bank post, a first-class restaurant, and 6 guest rooms will further enhance its economic capacity.

The 24-Hour Economy Market concept will extend to 261 districts nationwide. This broader strategy aims to transform local economies. Improving road networks connecting farming communities to the Asesewa market is also a priority. This will facilitate the transport of farm produce. Reduced post-harvest losses for farmers represent a key benefit from this improved infrastructure.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey highlighted the market's economic impact. She stated the Asesewa Market serves as an engine of economic growth. It also provides an avenue for income generation for local farmers. The modernisation will directly create substantial economic opportunities for residents.

Nene Offei Tagbadza, Chief of Asesewa, praised Former President Mahama’s commitment. He noted that previous administrations had neglected the market. This neglect led to a loss of prominence and failure to unlock its full potential. The Chief specifically mentioned Former President Mahama's 2016 manifesto promise to modernise the market. Fulfilling this promise signifies a direct response to the community's long-standing need for investment.

The redevelopment represents a substantial investment in local infrastructure. It promises to boost trade and employment. The project's success could set a precedent for other historical markets. It will provide a blueprint for stimulating economic activity across Ghana's districts. Analysts will monitor the project’s progress and its immediate economic impact on the region.
