The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has warned of imminent demolitions in Sampah Valley. This area is in the Weija community of the Greater Accra Region. The action follows significant flooding. The floods resulted from the spillage of the Weija Dam.
Authorities are considering this drastic measure. It aims to reduce pressure on the dam. It also seeks to prevent further disaster. NADMO officials have assessed the affected area. They have also met with the residents. The organisation believes removing some structures is the only safe option. This will protect lives and property from future floods.
Ghana has a history of flood-related disasters. These often intensify during the rainy season. The Weija Dam's spillage is a necessary safety measure. However, it highlights the ongoing challenge of urban planning. Many areas, like Sampah Valley, have seen development. These developments often occur in naturally flood-prone locations. This unregulated growth strains infrastructure. It also puts communities at higher risk. Prior years have seen similar warnings and actions in other parts of Accra.
Isaac Nelson Aklorbortu, NADMO's Ga South Municipal Director, spoke about the situation. He told JoyNews that authorities are contemplating stern action. Many parts of the community remain vulnerable. Zonal Director Shine Demordzi added a critical point. He stated that residents whose homes are demolished will not receive compensation. This reflects a strict stance on the necessity of the demolitions.
Demordzi criticized the Municipal Assembly. He cited weak supervision and poor enforcement. These failures allowed buildings to be erected in areas prone to flooding. The NADMO officials’ statements point to systemic issues. These issues contribute to repeated flood damage. Residents who lost property are appealing for urgent aid. They express deep distress over their destroyed belongings. Many say they have no safe place to sleep.
