A 52-year-old taxi driver named Moro Sule died in a serious road crash on the Wenchi-Wa Highway. The accident happened on Wednesday, May 20. The collision involved two Opel Astra taxis. One taxi was travelling from Awisa towards Wenchi. It was carrying three passengers. The driver reportedly tried to avoid hitting a 'motor king,' which is a type of motorcycle tricycle. This action caused the vehicle to move into the path of an oncoming taxi. The two vehicles then collided head-on. Mr. Sule was pronounced dead at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital. His body has been released to his family for burial according to Islamic tradition. The driver of the other taxi, 41-year-old Mamuda Mahama, suffered injuries. He is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital. Three passengers who were also hurt in the crash have been treated and released. Inspector George Mahama from the Wenchi Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) shared these details. This event underscores the persistent dangers on Ghana's highways. Road accidents remain a significant concern for public safety and the economy. The Ministry of Transport and Highways reported over 2,000 road fatalities in 2022. These incidents not only cause personal tragedy but also disrupt livelihoods and strain healthcare resources. Such accidents can involve economic losses from damaged vehicles and lost working hours. The cost of emergency response and medical treatment adds to the financial burden. The Wenchi-Wa Highway is a vital link for transport and commerce in the Bono Region. Accidents on such routes can delay the movement of goods and people. This affects local businesses and the broader economy. Improving road infrastructure and enforcing traffic laws are crucial. This helps to prevent future accidents and protect lives. The police continue their investigation into the exact circumstances of this tragic crash. They aim to determine if any traffic regulations were breached. This accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. It impacts families, communities, and the nation's economic productivity. Ghana's efforts to improve road safety include public awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement measures. However, the frequency of such events indicates that more action is needed.
