    1 min read2 min listen

A driver and his mate perished in a fuel tanker explosion at Adubinsu in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region. The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, June 4, 2026.

Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker was travelling from Edwenase towards Adubinsu. The driver allegedly lost control due to brake failure. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted and exploded. A fire then erupted, consuming nearby structures.

This incident fits into broader concerns about road safety and the transport of hazardous materials in Ghana. Fuel tanker accidents have become a recurring issue, often linked to infrastructure and vehicle maintenance. While specific economic data on the cost of such accidents is not readily available, each incident represents lost productivity and potential disruptions to supply chains. The destruction of seven container shops and a house signifies a direct economic loss to individuals and the local business environment.

According to an eyewitness, Daniel Owusu, the driver, Abass Toure, died instantly. The mate suffered severe burns and later died at Tafo Government Hospital. The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed receiving a distress call at 12:05 pm. Mamponteng Fire Commander DOII Akua Brago stated firefighters brought the blaze under control.

The immediate implication is the tragic loss of two lives and significant property damage. The incident will likely prompt renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations for fuel tankers. Future responses from authorities such as the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the Ghana Police Service will be closely watched. The economic cost of rebuilding destroyed shops and houses will impact local livelihoods.
