Challenging Heights and the Ghana Police Service successfully rescued 42 girls from human trafficking in Ghana's Western North Region. Thirty-six of these rescued individuals are now receiving care at the Challenging Heights Human Trafficking Victims Rehabilitation Centre. These victims, with ages ranging from 13 to 17, were lured from Nigeria with false promises of employment opportunities. Some had been instructed to lie about their ages to avoid detection by authorities.
The rescued girls originated mainly from low-income areas in Nigeria's Enugu, Imo, and Akwa Ibom States. Investigations revealed a pattern of systematic and brutal abuse. Each girl was assigned daily financial targets between GHS 1,000 and GHS 1,500. Many were forced into sexual acts with numerous men daily. Falling short of these targets led to physical punishment and starvation. Healthcare was also denied, even when victims were sick.
This operation underscores a worrying increase in cross-border trafficking of young Nigerian girls for sexual exploitation into Ghana. In 2025 alone, Challenging Heights, with partners, rescued 201 victims. This recent rescue brings the organization's total rescued number over two decades to 2,930. Challenging Heights advocates for a minimum of GHS 20 million in government funding for anti-trafficking agencies. These agencies are critically underfunded, hindering their ability to prevent, investigate, and prosecute trafficking cases effectively.
James Kofi Annan, President of Challenging Heights, emphasized the organization's commitment. "We are deeply concerned about the scale, organisation, and brutality of these trafficking networks," he stated. The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service is recognised for its dedication. Key officers acknowledged include D/C/Inspr. Emmanuel Gyamfi Yeboah and I/C DPW/C/Inspr. Ursula Osei, among others.
The incident highlights the urgent need for stronger government commitment to combating human trafficking. Under-resourced government agencies struggle to manage the growing problem. Challenging Heights' call for increased financial allocation is crucial for supporting these efforts. The organization also provides long-term rehabilitation and reintegration services to victims, benefiting thousands across Ghana. Future actions will likely focus on strengthening law enforcement capacity and international cooperation with Nigeria.
