Adansi Asokwa Member of Parliament, Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani, has launched a comprehensive skills training and youth empowerment program. The initiative has an estimated value of GHS 250,000. It aims to equip over 100 young men and women from the constituency with employable skills.
The program focuses on vocational trades crucial for immediate employment and entrepreneurship. More than 100 young individuals will participate in fashion design apprenticeships. Another 12 young ladies will receive professional hairdressing training. Beneficiaries will also receive essential startup tools and equipment upon completion of their training.
This investment in human capital comes at a critical time for Ghana's economy. Youth unemployment remains a significant challenge. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has previously highlighted the need for targeted interventions to address skills gaps. The World Bank has also warned that a skills shortage could jeopardise employment for millions of young people globally, including in Ghana.
Honourable Dorgbadzi-Dorani stated that the program is an investment in human capital, dreams, dignity, and economic independence. "Empowering one young person with a skill contributes to the growth of families, communities, and the local economy," he said. This initiative is described as the first large-scale program in the constituency to combine apprenticeship with direct startup support.
The program's success could serve as a model for other constituencies facing similar challenges. Policymakers will monitor its impact on local employment and entrepreneurship rates. The distribution of over 46 industrial sewing machines to trainers and beneficiaries underscores the program's commitment to practical application and quality skill transfer. The provision of 35 hairdryers and 20 butterfly sewing machines to existing hairdressers and aspiring designers further demonstrates tangible support.
