The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) initiative has created more than 1,300 jobs across Ghana's public and private sectors. Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, confirmed this significant employment generation.
Mr. Gyamfi made this disclosure during his appearance before Parliament's Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. He stated that mainstream public sector jobs accounted for at least 300 positions. The private sector component contributed over 1,000 jobs, primarily through new licensing reforms and contracts with local gold refineries.
This job creation aligns with Ghana's broader economic strategy to formalize and maximize benefits from its natural resources. The gold sector is a crucial contributor to the national economy and foreign exchange earnings. Efforts to increase local refining capacity and streamline licensing aim to retain more value within the country. This initiative also supports the government's agenda to address youth unemployment and foster economic participation.
“On top of my head, I can tell you that in terms of mainstream public sector jobs, nothing less than 300,” Mr. Gyamfi told the committee. He further explained, “The private sector component of jobs created under the GoldBod initiative should be more than a thousand.” He added that GoldBod will publish the official, detailed figures for these jobs by December 2026.
The GoldBod initiative's impact on employment will be closely watched as Ghana seeks sustainable economic growth. The expansion of licensing categories, including Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 gold-buying licences, is a key driver. These reforms allow more individuals and businesses to participate in the gold trade. The Tier 2 category alone currently has over 700 licence holders, many employing between three and five people. This structure provides opportunities for young people and facilitates access to financing through licensed aggregators. The continued success of these reforms will be vital for the gold sector's contribution to national development and job creation.
