The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) is urging the government to properly implement agreed conditions of service for Ghanaian workers. This call comes after TEWU successfully concluded negotiations for several key educational institutions in early 2026.

TEWU, a part of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), issued its 2026 May Day message on April 30. It stresses that Ghanaian workers make significant sacrifices for the country’s development. These workers deserve better working conditions in return. The union specifically asked for respect, fairness, and prompt action on negotiated agreements.

For years, Ghanaian workers have been committed to providing essential services. Their contributions are fundamental to Ghana’s economic growth and social progress. TEWU members in schools and public institutions exemplify this dedication. The union noted that recent labour talks have shown progress. It successfully finalised Conditions of Service agreements for vital bodies. These include the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Library Authority (GLA). Public and technical universities also reached agreements.

These agreements were reached after considerable delays. TEWU described these delays as “unfortunate.” They extended from the last three months of 2025 into the first three months of 2026. The union now insists on immediate and full implementation of these finalised terms. TEWU issued a stern warning against any actions that could hinder the execution of these agreements. “Any attempt to frustrate the union members, when it comes to the implementation of the Conditions of Service, will not be taken lightly,” the statement cautioned.

The union stated that Ghanaian workers consistently meet employer expectations. They show sacrifice and dedicated service. However, problems in the labour sector often stem from slow action. They also arise from inadequate resources provided by employers and state bodies. A good working environment is crucial for productivity. It is also key for maintaining harmony in industries.

As Ghana prepares for May Day 2026, TEWU calls for strong collaboration. It wants government agencies and public institution leaders to honour their promises. This strengthens partnerships within the labour sector. “We call on our social partners to live up to expectations so that together we continue to move our dear country to the economic and social development height we all desire,” the statement concluded. This message reflects ongoing concerns within Ghana’s public sector. Unions frequently highlight issues with conditions of service. They also raise points about pay and delays in implementing negotiated deals.
