Damang Gold Mine Limited has sold its entire initial gold production to the Ghana Gold Board. This initial delivery totaled approximately 110 kilograms of gold.
The sale, described as a landmark deal, aims to support Ghana’s foreign exchange reserve accumulation. The gold was delivered to the GoldBod assay facility in Accra on Thursday, May 30, 2026. After testing and valuation, the gold will be acquired on behalf of the Bank of Ghana. It will then be refined and added to the country’s official gold holdings.
This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader economic strategy to strengthen its external reserves. The nation relies heavily on foreign exchange for international trade and managing its currency. Increased gold holdings provide a stable asset to back the Ghana cedi. This helps cushion the economy against external shocks and currency volatility. The government's Ghana Accelerated National Reserve Accumulation Programme drives such efforts to boost national reserves.
Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, confirmed the transaction. He stated that the development demonstrates the growing role of local participation in Ghana’s mining sector. Mr. Gyamfi received a delegation from Damang Gold Mine Limited, led by company owner Ibrahim Mahama. He emphasized that greater indigenous involvement in mineral resource operations is crucial for Ghana. This maximizes value retention within the country, boosts economic returns, and drives long-term transformation.
Mr. Gyamfi also voiced concern over the relatively low contribution of large-scale mining companies to Ghana’s foreign reserve build-up. He urged other industry players to follow Damang Gold Mine Limited's example. This transaction is therefore a catalyst for similar deals in the future. It could encourage more local mining companies to sell their output directly to the Ghana Gold Board. This would further bolster the nation's reserve accumulation efforts and reinforce the Bank of Ghana’s balance sheet. Investors and policymakers will watch for increased local participation in Ghana's resource sector.
