Ghana attracted an estimated 2.61 billion US dollars in foreign direct investment (FDI) during 2025. This significant inflow came from 253 projects and existing companies. The provisional figures from the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) show a strong rebound in investor activity.

This performance represents a substantial increase from the 652 million US dollars recorded in 2024. The rebound reflects improved macroeconomic conditions and renewed policy stability in Ghana. These factors have boosted overall business confidence among foreign investors.

This renewed investor interest fits into Ghana's broader economic narrative of recovery. The country is stabilising from previous debt and currency pressures. The government is also actively promoting Ghana as an investment gateway for Africa, especially under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Simon Madjie, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, confirmed Ghana’s commitment to attracting investment. He stated, “We are open for foreign direct investment and we are even more open for foreign direct investment from Africa because we have the AfCFTA. We are the commercial hub for the continent.” This highlights Ghana’s strategy to leverage its role as the host of the AfCFTA Secretariat.

The return of significant FDI offers a timely boost for Ghana. The country is still rebuilding investor confidence following the debt crisis and a 3 billion US dollar International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme in 2023. This rebound suggests that investors are responding positively to the improving economic environment.

New GIPC-registered projects accounted for the largest share of inflows, contributing 1.437 billion US dollars from 180 projects. Existing upstream petroleum companies invested 994 million US dollars. New Free Zones investments added 165 million US dollars, and additional equity inflows into existing firms totalled 14 million US dollars. This diverse investment indicates broad interest in Ghana’s economy.

Data also showed strong reinvestment activity among companies already operating in Ghana. Of the 1.92 billion US dollars captured by the Bank of Ghana, about 1.83 billion US dollars came from reinvested earnings. This trend signals that existing investors are confident enough to retain profits within the country for expansion, rather than repatriating them.

Policymakers may interpret these reinvested earnings as a sign of growing confidence in Ghana's medium-term business outlook. China emerged as the leading source country by project count, with 70 registered projects. India followed with 22 projects. Nigeria accounted for 10 projects. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United Kingdom registered nine and eight projects respectively.

In terms of investment value, the Cayman Islands ranked first with 500 million US dollars. China followed closely with 486 million US dollars. This difference highlights that some countries contribute numerous smaller projects, while others make large-ticket investments in sectors like energy or manufacturing.

While the 2025 figures indicate a positive trajectory, risks remain. Businesses still voice concerns about energy tariffs, taxation, access to credit, and regulatory predictability. The cost of doing business also remains a challenge. The key question for Ghana is whether this rebound can be sustained and translated into long-term economic transformation.
