The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) Composite Index advanced by 1.33 per cent last week. This brought the index to 14,071.44 points, up from 13,886.74 points the previous week. This positive movement occurred despite a significant decrease in overall trading activity.

The total value of shares traded on the exchange dropped by more than 28 per cent compared to the week before. Trading value fell to GHS 104.63 million from GHS 145.82 million. The volume of shares traded also decreased by 26.25 per cent, settling at 18.83 million shares. This indicates fewer transactions despite the index's upward trend.

This performance reflects a market where specific company stocks saw strong price increases. However, the broader investor engagement remained quiet. The market capitalisation, which is the total value of all listed companies, slightly increased to GHS 266.70 billion. This rise was from GHS 266.27 billion in the prior week. The mixed signals of rising index and falling trading volumes highlight a nuanced market environment.

The Ghanaian Times reported these figures, noting the contrasting trends. The publication highlighted that selected stocks drove the market's positive index performance. This suggests that gains were concentrated in a few key companies rather than a widespread market rally. Such a scenario can indicate cautious investor sentiment.

Investors will closely watch whether this trend of rising indices with lower trading volumes continues. A sustained increase in the index without corresponding growth in trading activity could signal a lack of broad market confidence. Policymakers and market regulators will monitor these dynamics to ensure market stability. The performance of key stocks will remain a focus for analysts.

MTN Ghana emerged as the most dominant stock on the market during the week. It accounted for GHS 94.47 million of the total value traded. This figure represents about 90 per cent of all trading value. This high concentration means MTN Ghana heavily influenced the week's market statistics. GCB Bank followed with GHS 1.85 million in traded value. CAL Bank recorded GHS 1.21 million, showing a significant gap between the top performer and others.

In terms of volume, MTN Ghana also led the market with 14.52 million shares changing hands. CAL Bank was next with 1.72 million shares traded. Kasa, Enterprise Group, and Digicut also featured among the most traded by volume. Their respective volumes were 541,402, 526,791, and 349,022 shares. This dominance by MTN Ghana in both value and volume is a recurring feature of the GSE.

Hords was the best-performing stock, rising 18.03 per cent from GHS 0.61 to GHS 0.72. Digicut followed with a 15.91 per cent gain, moving from GHS 0.44 to GHS 0.51. CPC advanced 15.38 per cent, increasing from GHS 0.26 to GHS 0.30. AADS gained 9.52 per cent, closing at GHS 0.46. EGL rose five per cent to GHS 7.35. MTN Ghana, a major player, also gained 4.50 per cent, moving from GHS 6.22 to GHS 6.50. Kasa rose 2.79 per cent to GHS 1.84.

Conversely, Sogegah recorded the biggest decline, falling 7.27 per cent from GHS 5.50 to GHS 5.10. Goil declined 7.21 per cent to GHS 5.66. SIC dropped 7.20 per cent to GHS 4.64. Total fell 6.56 per cent to GHS 35.32. Das Pharma declined 5.88 per cent to GHS 1.12. ETI shed 5.33 per cent to GHS 1.60. IIL fell 3.92 per cent to GHS 0.49. CAL Bank declined 1.37 per cent to GHS 0.72. RBGH and Clyd recorded marginal declines of 0.99 per cent and 0.50 per cent respectively. GCB Bank was almost unchanged, slipping 0.12 per cent to GHS 40. The market's year-to-date performance remains positive despite these mixed individual stock results.
