Ghana Stock Exchange Market Capitalisation Reaches GHS 271 Billion

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) achieved a total market capitalisation of GHS 271.26 billion last week. This represents a 1.79 per cent increase from the GHS 266.50 billion recorded in the previous week. The market’s key indices also showed positive movement, reflecting strong performance.

This increase in market capitalisation occurred despite a significant slowdown in trading activity. The total volume of shares traded fell by 32.09 per cent, from 24.81 million shares to 16.85 million shares. The value of shares traded also saw a sharp decline of 52.63 per cent, dropping from GHS 141.88 million to GHS 67.21 million. This suggests that while overall market value grew, fewer transactions took place.

The Ghanaian economy has faced various challenges, including inflation and currency depreciation. A robust stock market, indicated by rising indices and market capitalisation, can signal investor confidence. This confidence is crucial for attracting both local and foreign investment, which supports economic growth and job creation. The year-to-date performance of the GSE Composite Index, up 64.13 per cent, highlights a strong recovery or sustained interest in Ghanaian equities.

According to the exchange’s weekly equities market report, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) rose by 2.43 per cent to close at 14,394.77 points. The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also advanced by 1.11 per cent, reaching 7,498.54 points. These figures underscore the positive momentum in the market, particularly among financial sector stocks.

Looking ahead, market participants will closely monitor trading volumes and values to assess the sustainability of these gains. A continued disparity between rising market capitalisation and falling trading activity could indicate a lack of broad market participation. Policy decisions by the Bank of Ghana and government fiscal measures will also influence investor sentiment and market performance. Businesses listed on the exchange will aim to maintain strong financial results to attract further investment.

Several individual stocks contributed to the market’s positive performance. CPC emerged as the best-performing stock, with its share price increasing by 16.67 per cent, from GHS 0.30 to GHS 0.35. Ecobank Ghana (EGH) followed with a gain of 12.99 per cent, closing at GHS 8.70. IIL advanced by 10.91 per cent to GHS 0.61, while TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana gained 6.49 per cent to close at GHS 41.00. FAB rose by five per cent to GHS 8.40.

MTN Ghana (MTNGH), a highly traded stock, also saw its price increase by 4.34 per cent, closing at GHS 6.73 from GHS 6.45. Other notable gainers included Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI), Access Bank Ghana, and GCB Bank. These companies saw increases of 0.65 per cent, 0.58 per cent, and 0.05 per cent, respectively. These gains demonstrate investor interest in specific sectors and companies.

Conversely, some stocks experienced declines. DIGICUT recorded the steepest fall, shedding 19.64 per cent to close at GHS 0.45 from GHS 0.56. Benso Oil Palm Plantation (BOPP) fell by 6.67 per cent to GHS 70.00. DAS Pharma lost 4.90 per cent to close at GHS 0.97. SIC Insurance and Kasa Resources also declined by 2.34 per cent and 1.56 per cent, respectively. These movements highlight the dynamic nature of stock market investments.

The information and communications technology (ICT) sector dominated trading activity. It accounted for GHS 45.70 million, or 68 per cent, of the total value of shares traded. This sector also represented 41.58 per cent of the total trading volume, with approximately 7.01 million shares exchanged. This dominance underscores the sector's importance to the Ghanaian market.

MTN Ghana led individual stocks in terms of value traded, with approximately GHS 45.54 million. Kasa Resources followed with GHS 11.57 million. In terms of volume, MTN Ghana again topped the market with about 6.97 million shares, followed by Kasa Resources with 6.27 million shares. These figures show the significant influence of large, well-established companies on market performance.
