The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded a total turnover of GHS 9.99 million during its trading session on Friday, May 15, 2026. This improved performance was largely due to significant trading activity in MTN Ghana and the NewGold Exchange Traded Fund (ETF).

Total shares and units traded on the GSE reached 1,464,714. Ordinary shares represented 1,416,667 of these, valued at GHS 6.65 million. NewGold ETF contributed 6,725 units, worth GHS 3.34 million. MTN Ghana alone accounted for 786,652 shares, valued at GHS 5.11 million, making it the dominant stock by both volume and value. Its share price, however, experienced a slight dip, closing at GHS 6.49, down GHS 0.01 from its previous close of GHS 6.50.

This concentrated market activity underscores a long-standing feature of Ghana's equity market. Major companies like MTN Ghana often command a large share of trading volumes and values. The sustained interest in NewGold ETF reflects investors' ongoing preference for gold-linked assets. Gold is seen as a stable investment or 'hedge' during economic uncertainty. This trend is consistent with global investor behaviour.

According to the GSE Official List, MTN Ghana's share of traded value reached 51.1%. NewGold ETF contributed 33.4% of the total turnover. Together, these two instruments made up 84.5% of all trading activity. This significant concentration shows that liquidity remains heavily focused on a small number of prominent securities. Despite strong turnover, many other listed companies saw little to no trading.

The market's performance indicates cautious investor behaviour. While liquidity is available for certain high-profile stocks, broader participation across other listed companies remains uneven. Financial stocks like Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) and CalBank also saw active trading. ETI recorded 270,693 shares traded, worth GHS 414,076.13, closing down GHS 0.01 at GHS 1.52. CalBank traded 306,413 shares, valued at GHS 237,495.63, and gained GHS 0.01 to close at GHS 0.77.

The upcoming trading sessions will likely focus on whether MTN Ghana's share price stabilises after its minor decline. Investors will also watch if financial stocks như CalBank and ETI continue to attract substantial trading volumes. The sustained interest in NewGold ETF will be crucial, given the continuing investor demand for gold-linked investments.

This market dynamic highlights the need for broader market development beyond a few key players. Increased investor participation across a wider range of listed companies would improve overall market depth and liquidity. The GSE’s continued efforts to attract more listings and educate investors could help diversify trading activity.
