Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) increased significantly during the week ending October 9, 2026. The total value of shares traded rose by 35.6% to GHS 141.88 million, up from GHS 104.63 million in the previous week. This surge occurred even as the broader market recorded slight declines in its main indices.
The substantial rise in trading value and volume was primarily driven by MTN Ghana. The telecommunications giant accounted for 82.3% of the total volume traded, with 20.40 million shares changing hands. Its shares represented 91.5% of the total value traded on the exchange, amounting to GHS 129.81 million. This concentration highlights MTN Ghana's dominant role in the market's weekly performance.
This performance fits into a broader trend of resilience for the Ghanaian stock market. Despite the weekly dip, the GSE Composite Index has gained 60.24% year-to-date in 2026. The GSE Financial Stocks Index also shows strong annual growth, up 59.59%. The total market capitalisation of listed companies has increased by 54.90% over the same period, indicating robust investor confidence throughout the year.
According to the exchange’s weekly trading summary, the volume of shares traded also increased by 31.8% to 24.81 million shares. This was up from 18.83 million shares a week earlier. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector recorded the highest trading value at GHS 129.92 million, far exceeding the financial sector's GHS 4.94 million. This data underscores the significant influence of the ICT sector, particularly MTN Ghana, on overall market activity.
Despite the increased trading activity, the GSE Composite Index, which tracks the performance of all listed shares, fell by 0.13% to 14,053.48 points. The GSE Financial Stocks Index also declined by 0.50% to 7,416.25 points. The total market value of listed companies slipped by 0.08% from GHS 266.70 billion to GHS 266.50 billion. This indicates that while money was actively moving, the overall market value saw a minor contraction.
The mixed performance of individual stocks contributed to the broader market's slight decline. HORDS recorded the biggest percentage gain, rising by 13.89%. Intravenous Infusions Limited (IIL) followed with a 12.24% increase, and SIC Insurance Company gained 10.56%. Conversely, DAS Pharma recorded the largest decline, falling by 8.93%. Fan Milk fell by 4.76%, and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated declined by 3.75%. Even MTN Ghana's share price saw a slight dip of 0.77% during the week.
This week's trading patterns suggest that investors are actively engaging with specific high-performing stocks, particularly in the ICT sector. However, this focused activity did not prevent a minor correction in the overall market indices. Future weeks will show if this trend of concentrated trading continues or if broader market participation increases. Analysts will closely watch whether the strong year-to-date gains can withstand these weekly fluctuations, especially as the year progresses towards its end. The market's ability to maintain its annual growth trajectory despite short-term dips remains a key indicator for investors.
