Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) reached GHS 13.97 million on Friday, May 22, 2026, driven significantly by activity in Scancom PLC, also known as MTN Ghana. This increased turnover reflects a stronger market session compared to previous periods for the 7,217th trading day.

The total volume of shares traded stood at 2.35 million, with ordinary shares making up 2.34 million of this total. MTN Ghana alone accounted for 1.78 million shares, representing GHS 11.96 million of the total value traded. This means MTN Ghana contributed about 85.6% of the day’s total market value.

This reliance on MTN Ghana highlights a persistent trend on the GSE where market liquidity often concentrates in a few large, actively traded companies. Data shows that such single-stock dominance can skew overall market performance indicators and reduce participation in smaller-cap stocks. Previous trading sessions have also observed MTN Ghana as a key driver of market activity.

According to the official trading list, Clydestone Ghana PLC and ZEN Petroleum Holdings PLC were the day’s top performers. Clydestone gained GHS 0.04 to close at GHS 2.04, reaching its year high. ZEN Petroleum jumped GHS 0.88 to close at GHS 9.68, also reaching its year high from a year low of GHS 5.00.

The strong performance of these gainers suggests investor interest in specific sectors, particularly technology and petroleum, even as the broader market shows mixed results. Investors will closely watch whether this momentum in Clydestone and ZEN Petroleum can be maintained in future trading sessions. Market analysts will also monitor if liquidity begins to spread beyond MTN Ghana to other financial, consumer, and alternative market stocks, indicating a healthier, more diversified market activity.

GCB Bank PLC was the second-largest contributor by value, with 18,453 shares traded for GHS 682,576.47, closing unchanged at GHS 36.99. Access Bank Ghana PLC also saw activity, trading 8,491 shares for GHS 234,351.60. Cal Bank PLC traded 300,206 shares valued at GHS 227,384.75.

Despite the gains, several stocks posted declines. Enterprise Group PLC fell by GHS 0.06 to GHS 10.00. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated decreased by GHS 0.07 to GHS 1.33. Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC lost GHS 0.21 to close at GHS 14.75. SIC Insurance Company PLC dropped GHS 0.14 to GHS 5.29. Societe Generale Ghana PLC also slipped by GHS 0.03 to GHS 6.51.

The Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) segment saw 117 units of NewGold traded, valued at GHS 58,149, closing unchanged at GHS 497.00. Standard Chartered Bank preference shares recorded 500 shares valued at GHS 450, also closing unchanged at GHS 0.90.

Activity on the Ghana Alternative Market (GAX) remained limited. Hords PLC recorded 4,877 shares valued at GHS 585.22. Intravenous Infusions PLC traded 3,100 shares valued at GHS 279.00. Samba Foods PLC, Meridian Marshalls Holding Company, and Digicut Production & Advertising PLC recorded no trades. This thin activity on the GAX highlights the ongoing challenge of attracting significant investor interest to smaller companies.
