Ashanti Elders Back Paul Afoko's Leadership for NPP Reorganisation

The Ashanti Regional Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally acknowledged the leadership strengths of Paul Awentami Afoko. They highlighted his history of successful party reorganisation. This endorsement came during a significant meeting in Kumasi. The elders referred to Mr. Afoko as a well-known figure whose past strategies greatly helped the NPP. Many elders reported witnessing his organisational skills first-hand. These skills directly led to electoral victories for the party. The council expressed worry about the NPP's decreasing support in the five northern regions. They therefore asked Mr. Afoko to take a leading role. He is expected to work with the NPP flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia. This collaboration aims to win back lost votes before the 2028 general elections. The NPP has faced electoral challenges recently. The party's performance in the 2024 general elections showed a decline in some areas. Political analysts suggest that a strong focus on internal unity and strategic reorganisation is crucial for future success. The Ashanti Region is a traditional stronghold for the NPP. Its elders' support can significantly influence party direction. "We have experienced your leadership, and we know your capabilities," the Council of Elders stated. "The task before us is clear: help bring the north home when you become National Chairman. Work closely with Dr Bawumia so that together, you can make a meaningful impact and leave an indelible mark on this party." Mr. Afoko is currently consulting with party leaders across the country. He has not yet officially announced his intentions for national office. He conveyed his thanks for the support from the Ashanti elders. He also restated his dedication to the NPP, despite past difficulties. Mr. Afoko noted the Ashanti Region's importance. "The Ashanti Region remains the heartbeat of the NPP, and I am open to your advice because you are the ones running the party," he said. He also shared his concerns about the party's current standing. He urged members to focus on unity instead of assigning blame. "I am deeply worried about our current state. But this is not the time to apportion blame for the 2024 defeat. Every one of us must accept responsibility. We cannot sit back and watch the party slide backwards. Our only option is to unite, pool our experience, and work collectively to return the NPP to power in 2028," he urged. He called for collaboration among all party members. This is essential to build a stronger organisation for future elections. The NPP's national leadership is expected to consider these calls for rejuvenation. The party's ability to unify its factions and reconnect with voters in all regions will be key to its electoral prospects in 2028. Mr. Afoko's organisational expertise is seen by some as a potential asset in this effort.
