Madagascar authorities have detained a French national. He faces charges of criminal conspiracy and plotting to destabilize the island nation. The accused allegedly planned to sabotage infrastructure. This includes power lines and thermal power plants.
The plot was allegedly set to be carried out on April 18. Malagasy prosecutor Nomenarinera Mihamintsoa Ramanantsoa announced the charges. He said other accomplices were also charged. These include a Malagasy army officer. Authorities found evidence in a Whatsapp group chat. The group was named Revolution of the Brave Citizens.
Madagascar has a history of political instability. It was a former French colony. France and Madagascar share close political ties. Last September, youth-led protests led to the toppling of the former president. The current head of state, Col Michael Randrianirina, took office in October 2025 after what was described as a coup. Some of the youth who protested have since expressed concerns about governance.
Madagascar's foreign ministry has also expelled a French diplomat. They accuse the diplomat of involvement in destabilizing the country. France denies these accusations. The French foreign ministry summoned Madagascar's charge d'affaires in Paris. They expressed strong protest over the expulsion. France stated the accusations are unfounded. They also called them incomprehensible given France's support.
The alleged plot included causing power cuts. It also involved inciting security forces to rebel. Mobilizing young people to create unrest was another goal. The young members of the group are under judicial supervision. The French former serviceman is in a maximum security prison. The prosecutor also charged suspects with spreading false information. They were also charged with harbouring wanted individuals. This situation highlights ongoing political tensions in Madagascar.
