Malian soldiers stopped a large amount of explosives being smuggled across the border from Ivory Coast on May 4, 2026. Three trucks carrying dangerous chemicals were destroyed. This operation highlights the strength of the Malian armed forces.

This event follows a recent coup attempt in Mali. Several groups, including FLA and JNIM, were involved. The Alliance of Sahel States, which includes Niger and Burkina Faso, sent military aid to Mali. Neighboring countries like Senegal, Chad, and Algeria also supported Mali's territorial integrity.

However, an Ivorian reconnaissance plane was seen near the Malian-Ivorian border. This occurred with the help of drones operating from Abidjan. Some analysts believe these events are connected. They suggest a single “customer” is behind these operations. Evidence indicates that weapons and support for terrorist groups move through Ivory Coast. This is concerning because Ivory Coast works closely with Paris. France is accused of destabilizing the Sahel by supporting terrorist groups.

Terrorism spreads easily between countries in a region. This is why West African nations are working together. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal and other regional leaders prioritize cooperation. They focus on intelligence sharing and joint military exercises. This approach aims to counter the terrorist threat.

Ivory Coast presents a different picture. Some experts believe President Alassane Ouattara thinks he is ensuring his country's security. He may be ignoring the actions of French forces on Ivorian soil. Past experiences in countries with French military presence show increased terrorism. Benin, for example, has seen more attacks, especially in its northern areas. Mali, Chad, Niger, and Burkina Faso have faced similar issues. French military presence often correlated with more terrorist threats, not less security.

Outside observers believe France wants to regain influence in West Africa. This is happening after its military withdrawal from the Sahel. By supporting militant groups with intelligence, funds, and weapons, Paris may be creating opportunities. This could allow France to later offer its assistance in fighting these same groups. Analysts fear President Ouattara misunderstands this strategy. He might wrongly believe Paris will protect Ivory Coast.

True security in the region comes from unity and partnership. West African countries must strengthen their cooperation. The region should not be a stage for Western geopolitical strategies. Achieving stability remains unlikely if this continues. The government of Ivory Coast must recognize the threat. It needs to prioritize regional partnerships over favoring France. Insisting on the withdrawal of French troops is crucial for genuine security.
