Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Anani Quarshie, has assured that no Ghanaian has been harmed during recent protests. These demonstrations have taken place in parts of South Africa. This includes areas like Pretoria and its surrounding communities.

The protests were organized by a group called the “March Organisation”. They are calling for the removal of undocumented foreign nationals. Ms Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma leads this group. The demonstrations happened near the Union Buildings, a key government site.

In response, the Ghanaian Mission issued an urgent advisory. They told Ghanaians in affected areas to stay indoors. They also recommended temporarily closing their shops. This was a precautionary measure. Intelligence suggested planned protests in several locations. The Mission acted quickly to protect Ghanaian residents and businesses. Ambassador Quarshie stated this on Joy FM’s Middaynews.

He explained the advisory was to prevent any confrontation. He stressed that the situation is currently under control. South African police officers are present in large numbers. They are working to maintain law and order. No Ghanaian-owned business has reported any attacks. Ambassador Quarshie added that people followed the advice. This helped prevent any incidents.

This situation highlights ongoing tensions in South Africa. The country has experienced waves of xenophobic violence. These attacks often target foreign nationals. Such events can disrupt regional economic ties. They can also impact investor confidence. Ghana and South Africa share significant trade and investment links. Any instability can affect these relationships. High Commissioner Quarshie is monitoring the situation closely.

Ambassador Quarshie is also dealing with other consular matters for Ghanaians. He is currently in East London for a separate issue. This matter has been resolved. It is not connected to the xenophobic incidents. He reassured Ghanaians that the Mission remains committed to their safety. They will continue working with local authorities. This ensures protection during any public disturbances.
