The Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly has completed four modern markets equipped with ancillary facilities to enhance the local economy and improve trading activities in the municipality. These projects represent a significant investment in infrastructure, providing direct benefits to local traders and residents. The total investment includes a 24 lockable stores facility, a multi-story commercial building with 22 lockable stores, and an additional 40 lockable stores at Kalpohin Market.
These market developments were a central part of achievements presented during the Assembly’s recent “Accounting to the People” forum. The projects specifically include commercial sheds, secure lockable stores, and comprehensive market facilities. These facilities offer washrooms, clinics, crèches, and police posts, providing essential services alongside improved trading spaces. This integrated approach aims to create a safer and more convenient environment for buyers and sellers.
This initiative aligns with Ghana’s broader strategy to decentralise economic development and bolster regional economies. Many assemblies across the country are undertaking similar infrastructure projects to support local commerce and create job opportunities. The construction of these markets reflects a national push to improve living conditions and accelerate socio-economic development in urban and peri-urban centres. These efforts are crucial for sustaining economic growth beyond major metropolitan areas, spreading prosperity more evenly across the nation.
Mr. Abdulai Imoro Gong, the Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive, stated these interventions were part of the Assembly’s commitment to improving residents’ lives. He detailed the construction of 24 lockable stores, a 20-seater water closet toilet facility, and paved areas under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme. He also highlighted a two-storey commercial facility in Jisonayili, featuring 22 lockable stores, a police post, crèche, clinic, and 72 stalls. At Kalpohin Market, 24 stalls, a 14-seater washroom, and a paved lorry and car park were completed, alongside a two-storey building with 40 lockable stores. These comprehensive additions indicate a strategic focus on expanding market capacity and improving public amenities.
The improved market infrastructure is expected to increase trading volumes and revenue generation for the municipality. These new markets will attract more traders and customers, stimulating local commerce and boosting the income of residents. Furthermore, the enhanced facilities like clinics and police posts will improve public safety and well-being, fostering a more conducive environment for economic activities. This development should also encourage further public and private investment in the Sagnarigu area, leading to sustained economic growth. Decision-makers and market participants will observe the impact on local employment figures and business registration rates.
Beyond market development, the Assembly also reported significant progress in other sectors. Seven health infrastructure projects and eight educational infrastructure projects were completed, improving access to primary healthcare and learning conditions. The Assembly supplied 1,600 dual desks to schools. Additionally, 163 Persons with Disabilities received support for business development, healthcare, and education. In the water and sanitation sector, 10 new boreholes were drilled, and 6 others rehabilitated. Approximately 2,000 metres of pipelines were laid to enhance water supply. Road infrastructure also saw improvements, with about 51 kilometres under construction and 11 kilometres surfaced with bitumen. These parallel developments underscore a holistic approach to municipal development, aiming for comprehensive improvements in the lives of Sagnarigu residents.
