Zoomlion Kenya has evacuated over 55,000 tonnes of waste in Nairobi in just over a month. The company began its work transforming the city’s waste management system on March 27, 2026. This huge effort is part of an integrated waste management programme for the Kenyan capital.

The company’s work aims to improve cleanliness, the environment, and public health. Before Zoomlion’s intervention, Nairobi had about 109 illegal dumpsites. These sites posed serious risks to people and nature. Zoomlion is now clearing massive amounts of waste from these illegal spots. The waste is moved to the designated Dandora Dumpsite.

This operation fits into a broader pattern of African nations seeking homegrown solutions for development. Kenya’s Majority Leader, Kimani Ichung’wah, called this partnership a positive example of intra-African cooperation. He noted that African countries are increasingly relying on their own strategies. This project shows a shift from talk to real action, improving city life.

Dr. Peter Dagadu, Project Director for Zoomlion Kenya, highlighted the scope of the work. He stated that the amount of waste evacuated is more than four times what was previously handled. He also spoke about future plans. These include building four zonal transfer stations. Each station will manage 800 to 1,200 tonnes of waste daily. This will make waste collection and transport more efficient.

A major infrastructure project is also planned. By November 2026, Zoomlion expects to open a large waste processing facility in Ruai. This facility can handle 3,600 tonnes of waste per day. It will support recycling and composting. The goal is to reduce reliance on landfills. It also promotes a circular economy, where resources are reused.

Dr. Dagadu emphasized that this programme includes everyone. They are working with informal waste collectors, community groups, and existing operators. This ensures that the changes are sustainable. It also creates shared economic chances for all involved. The project aims for inclusivity and broad benefit.

The initiative shows a commitment to modern waste management. It addresses a key challenge faced by many rapidly growing African cities. Efficient waste management is crucial for economic development and quality of life. Investments in such infrastructure can attract further business and improve public services.

The Dandora Dumpsite itself is also seeing upgrades. Internal roads are being improved. Tipping operations are being reorganized. The site will now operate 24 hours a day. This will help manage the increased flow of waste and improve efficiency.

This collaboration between Zoomlion Kenya and Nairobi city authorities signifies a push towards more structured and impactful urban development. The involvement of the Jospong Group, Zoomlion’s parent company, highlights the growing scale of African enterprises with regional ambitions. The Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi earlier in May 2026 also underscored this trend of continental collaboration.

Mr. Ichung’wah assured that Kenya is ready to partner with serious entities. He wants partners who bring both technical skill and lasting solutions. Dr. Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, urged Zoomlion Kenya staff to be dedicated. He stressed that success needs unity and strong ethics. He noted that national prosperity comes from good policies and skilled people, not just resources.

The project’s success will be measured not only by waste evacuated but also by its long-term environmental impact. The circular economy principles aim to turn waste into valuable resources. This can stimulate new industries and create jobs. The focus on collaboration ensures that the benefits reach various segments of society.
