Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for 2024, has instructed NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) to actively position the party as a "government-in-waiting." This strategic directive is aimed at preparing the NPP for the forthcoming 2028 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia stated that the party has concluded its period of introspection. Now, the immediate focus must shift to regaining public confidence. The party needs to present itself as a credible alternative government capable of leading Ghana. He stressed that every action and public statement by NPP lawmakers must aim to convince Ghanaians of the party's readiness to govern effectively from January 7, 2029.

The former Vice President explained that the NPP's current role in opposition is critical for demonstrating its capability. The positions taken on national issues, parliamentary debates, and public engagements must reflect strategic thinking and discipline. This includes the alternative proposals brought before Parliament and the messages communicated to the press. Bawumia emphasized that the goal is to persuade the people of Ghana that the NPP can manage the country better than the current administration.

He called for robust policy alternatives that are well-researched. Coordinated communication across the party is also essential for consistency in messaging. Bawumia assured the NPP's Minority caucus of his direct support. He revealed that the party is establishing structures to enhance parliamentary coordination and communication. Sector committees will also be strengthened to ensure a unified strategy across all party efforts.

Dr. Bawumia urged MPs to remind Ghanaians of the NPP's past accomplishments. He pointed to flagship social intervention programs like the National Health Insurance Scheme. The school feeding programme and Free Senior High School policy were also mentioned as key achievements. He believes the NPP is the best-placed party to advance Ghana’s future.

He praised the Minority caucus for their strong performance over the past 17 months. Bawumia described them as the "last line of defence" and a "glimmer of hope" for Ghanaians. He acknowledged their role in holding the government accountable. He noted that opposition parties are not spectators but institutions of accountability. They scrutinize policies and reassure citizens.

Bawumia expressed strong confidence in the capabilities of the NPP MPs. He encouraged them to stay focused on the party's long-term political objectives. He believes in their intellect, courage, experience, and political instincts. Above all, he trusts their dedication to the NPP and to Ghana.
