Catholic Priest Suspended for Abandoning Post
The Catholic Diocese of Konongo-Mampong has indefinitely suspended a priest for abandoning his post without permission. Rev. Fr. Samuel Adapore, formerly Rector of St. Anthony of Padua Rectorate, received a suspension a divinis effective Monday, 24 August 2026. This action bars him from all public priestly duties, including celebrating Mass. The Diocese stated Fr. Adapore took a unilateral leave of absence, abandoning his ministry at Nkwantakese. He removed all personal belongings from the mission house without informing anyone. The Diocese further indicated that Fr. Adapore has blocked all access to him, and his family claims ignorance of his whereabouts. This incident highlights the internal governance and disciplinary mechanisms within religious institutions in Ghana. While not directly impacting the national economy, such events can affect community trust and local church operations. The Catholic Church remains a significant social and moral voice across the country, influencing various aspects of public life. Most Rev. John Opoku-Agyemang, Bishop of the Diocese, signed the letter announcing the sanction. He addressed it to all clergy and the faithful, expressing a heavy heart but a strong sense of duty. The decision followed consultation with the College of Consultors, adhering to established canonical procedures. This suspension means Rev. Fr. Adapore cannot administer sacraments publicly, nor can he officiate at other liturgical services. The faithful are called to remember the priest in their prayers. The situation underscores the strict adherence to protocols expected of clergy within the Catholic Church. Future developments will likely depend on any potential communication from Fr. Adapore or further statements from the Diocese regarding his status.
