The shelter was commissioned by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey. It aims to provide a safe haven for those experiencing abuse. Services will help victims rebuild their lives. The Domestic Violence Board and UNICEF also attended the launch on May 30, 2026.
This development fits into a broader effort to combat violence. Ghana has laws like the Domestic Violence Act. It also has the Domestic Violence Secretariat and DOVVSU within the police. However, safe accommodation for survivors remains a problem. Many flee abuse but struggle to find safe housing. This new shelter aims to fill that gap.
Minister Agnes Naa Momo Lartey stated the shelter is a place of refuge and dignity. "Today, we are not merely opening a building; we are opening a door to safety, dignity, hope and restoration for survivors of abuse," she said. She noted that access to safe spaces has been a challenge.
The shelter will offer temporary housing, counselling, and legal help. Medical referrals and rehabilitation programmes are also planned. These services aim to restore victims' confidence and independence. The government, under the administration of John Dramani Mahama, sees this as part of its social protection agenda. Expanding support structures is a key priority.
Beyond immediate safety, the focus is on long-term recovery. Survivors often face emotional trauma and social stigma. They may also experience economic hardship. The government plans to strengthen reintegration programmes. These will help survivors return to their communities and live free from violence.
Stakeholders like UNICEF commended the initiative. They stressed that prevention is also vital. Public education to address root causes is needed. These include harmful social norms and gender inequality. Sustainable funding is crucial for the shelter's long-term success. The shelter represents a commitment to enhancing protection for those affected by domestic violence.
