The government has urged the Gaming Commission of Ghana to make sure the country's growing gaming sector benefits the economy. This call came during the commission's 20th-anniversary celebration in Accra. Presidential Advisor on the Economy Seth Terkper highlighted this on Friday, May 15. He stated that the commission needs to do more than just manage growth.

Mr. Terkper explained the commission must shape industry expansion. The goal is to translate this growth into measurable national advantages. It should also build investor trust. Operations must follow clear standards. These standards should protect young people. They should also support long-term economic stability.

The gaming industry in Ghana has seen rapid expansion. This growth needs to fit into the government's broader plan for economic change. Data shows a steady increase in gaming activities. This trend requires careful management to ensure it serves national interests. Previous government efforts have focused on formalizing sectors. This is part of a larger push for economic transformation.

Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlarbi, voiced concerns. He pointed to the rise of illegal online gaming platforms. These platforms make regulation and responsible gaming difficult. The minister mentioned the exposure of young people to gambling. He also noted potential misuse for illicit financial activities. Stronger cooperation is needed. This involves the commission, security agencies, fintech companies, and operators.

Acting Gaming Commissioner Emmanuel Siisi Baidoo outlined current efforts. The commission is working to combat gaming addiction. This is a key focus, especially for the youth. They are increasing public education. They are also strengthening regulatory enforcement. Responsible gaming sensitisation in schools remains a priority. The commission has visited many senior high schools across the Greater Accra, Central, Ashanti, and Northern Regions.

Further initiatives include intensifying public education campaigns. The commission plans to conduct sensitisation programmes in about 15 more schools in Accra. This proactive approach aims to address societal concerns. It also seeks to ensure the gaming industry develops ethically and contributes positively to Ghana.
