The Rent Control Department is tightening its grip on hostels across Ghana. It is clamping down on rent increases that are seen as unfair. This action aims to protect students and their families. It is also meant to ease the financial strain caused by rising accommodation costs. The department stated this on May 8, 2026.

Acting Rent Commissioner Fredrick Opoku explained the department's goals. He said the intervention is through careful assessment and discussion. It is not through aggressive measures. The department wants to work with hostel owners. This is to make sure prices follow the rules. Fairness for everyone is a key aim. Mr. Opoku noted that students and parents are facing difficulties. The government wants to fix this problem with a sensible approach. He said this during an interview on Channel One TV.

This effort fits into a larger picture of economic challenges. The cost of living, including housing for students, has been rising. This puts pressure on household budgets. Many students rely on private hostels near universities. These increases impact their ability to afford education. The government is looking for ways to make essential services more affordable. This action signals a commitment to consumer protection in the education sector.

Mr. Opoku stressed that the department is not attacking businesses. He said this is about making Ghana better for everyone. Landlords, property owners, tenants, and students will all gain if done correctly. His remarks follow unannounced checks at hostels. These checks occurred at facilities near the University of Professional Studies, Accra and the University of Ghana. Allegations of unlawful price hikes triggered these inspections. The exercise began on May 6.

The department will continue its assessment across the country. This will last until the end of 2026. After this period, the department will increase its oversight. Hostel operators are urged to talk to the Rent Control Department first. They should do this before making any new fee changes. This will help avoid random or unfair charges. The aim is to create a balanced environment for education and business.
