Three Chinese nationals were arrested on Thursday, May 14, 2026, for conducting illegal mining operations on the Tano River. The arrests occurred in the Amenfi West District during an operation by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Blue Water Guards. The operation identified significant environmental damage and the use of prohibited mining equipment.

The mission targeted illegal mining activities along the river, specifically at Oforikrom. NAIMOS officials discovered miners using Changfan machines on floating platforms directly in the river. Many miners escaped upon sensing the security team's arrival. The detained individuals, Deng Jun (37), Deng Bi Hua (50), and Deng Bi Qiang (32), were reportedly overseeing these unauthorized operations. Inspections at the site showed the Tano River was heavily polluted. Farmlands were also significantly destroyed by these activities. The depth of the river had been drastically reduced.

This incident underscores the persistent challenge of illegal mining, often called 'galamsey', in Ghana. It severely impacts the environment and vital water resources. In 2025, the World Health Organization warned that unsafe water sources contribute to numerous diseases. Illegal mining activities directly threaten Ghana's water security. The government has implemented various programs, including the responsible cooperative mining initiative, to combat this issue. These efforts aim to provide legal avenues for mining and reduce environmental harm.

NAIMOS stated its strong commitment to eradicating illegal mining. The Secretariat urges all illegal miners to join the government's cooperative mining programme. Failure to do so risks equipment confiscation and legal prosecution. The arrested foreign nationals were handed over to the Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Immigration Service in Accra for further processing. The operation also resulted in the seizure of a pump-action gun, twelve cartridges, and a Toyota Hilux pickup. More than 20 Changfan machines, pipelines, and makeshift structures were destroyed.

The continued presence of illegal mining, especially involving foreign nationals, highlights the complex nature of enforcement. The environmental and economic costs are substantial. Decisions on prosecution and restitution will be closely watched. This incident may prompt stricter border controls and further investigation into the networks supporting such operations. Future efforts will likely focus on enhanced surveillance and collaboration with international agencies.
