Vice President urges stronger city partnerships for global challenges

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang advocates for enhanced collaboration among municipalities worldwide.

Ghana's Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has called for stronger partnerships among cities globally. She stated that greater collaboration is essential for addressing shared challenges and promoting sustainable development. This call came during the 70th anniversary celebration of Sister Cities International in Washington, D.C. The Vice President urged municipalities to work together through knowledge sharing, innovation, and practical cooperation. She identified rapid urbanisation, climate change, waste management, public health, and disaster preparedness as pressing global challenges. Professor Opoku-Agyemang stressed that no single municipality can tackle these complex issues alone. This initiative aligns with Ghana's broader economic and political strategy to strengthen local governance and decentralisation. The country's decentralisation agenda aims to empower Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with resources and autonomy. This approach enables them to respond effectively to community development needs and drive inclusive economic growth. Professor Opoku-Agyemang stated, "Municipalities must work together to address common global challenges through knowledge sharing, strengthening institutional capacity and developing practical solutions that enhance the quality of life of citizens." She highlighted the importance of exchanging expertise and adopting sustainable approaches to improve service delivery and community resilience. Strengthening local governance is critical for accelerating development, according to the Vice President. Governments must provide local authorities with the necessary resources and autonomy. This ensures efficient public services and fosters inclusive economic growth at the local level. Ghana's long-standing sister-city partnerships with communities in the United States serve as important platforms. These partnerships facilitate knowledge exchange, cultural cooperation, investment promotion, and institutional capacity building. The Vice President reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to expanding international municipal partnerships. These partnerships support sustainable economic development and deepen cooperation between African cities and their global counterparts. The Vice President's remarks reflect a growing global trend where governments and local authorities seek cross-border collaborations. Such collaborations are vital for addressing complex urban challenges and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through local action. This emphasis on collaboration is crucial as urban populations continue to grow, placing increased strain on infrastructure and resources. Effective city partnerships can lead to shared best practices in areas like renewable energy, smart city technologies, and public transportation. This can significantly improve the quality of life for urban residents. Ghana's proactive stance in advocating for these partnerships positions it as a leader in regional development. The nation's experience with decentralisation provides a valuable model for other African countries. This approach can help them build resilient and sustainable urban environments. The ongoing efforts to strengthen MMDAs are central to achieving these national and international development goals.
