The Wa High Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Rashid Ahmed Anaata. He is a popular wedding master of ceremonies. The court upheld his prison sentence for defiling minors. Anaata, aged 38, had challenged his conviction by the Wa Circuit Court. He argued that there was a miscarriage of justice. He also claimed flaws in the prosecution’s case.

High Court judge Justice Osei Wusu Antwi delivered the judgment. The judge stated that the prosecution presented sufficient evidence. This affirmed the lower court’s decision. Justice Antwi found a "plethora of evidence" proving Anaata engaged in sexual acts with victims. The defence arguments were described as "a sham, defenceless, and not candid to the court." Inconsistencies were cited in the submitted arguments.

Anaata, known as “Anaata” in the Upper West Region, was a familiar figure. He often MC’d Islamic weddings and family gatherings. His public image faced scrutiny in 2023. Several underage girls reportedly accused him of sexual assault and defilement. Allegations involved more than a dozen individuals. Prosecutors proceeded with charges concerning three minors. The Wa Circuit Court, under Judge Jonathan Avogo, convicted him on six counts of defilement. He received custodial sentences in October 2023.

The current appeal concerned one of three separate cases. Anaata received an eight-year sentence with hard labour for this conviction. The other two cases each resulted in seven-year terms. Appeals for the remaining two convictions are scheduled for June 19, 2026. Anaata remained quiet during the judgment reading. His family and friends present outside the court showed visible emotion. They were seen in tears as Anaata was escorted to a vehicle by prison officers.

This case highlights ongoing efforts to address sexual offenses against children in Ghana. Legal rulings on such matters can influence public perception of justice. They also affect the community's trust in the judicial system. The outcome may encourage other victims to come forward. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences for perpetrators. Sentencing in similar cases often varies by severity and jurisdiction across Ghana. For instance, another farmer received 18 years for defiling an 8-year-old girl earlier. These legal proceedings are closely watched. They reflect the nation's commitment to child protection laws.
