Afrotoons, a new animation studio, officially launched in Accra, Ghana, yesterday. The company focuses on creating authentic African stories for children. This launch aims to bring these stories to global audiences. Afrotoons signals a new era for African children's storytelling. The event marked a major milestone for the studio.

The company’s mission is to build a globally scalable platform for African children's content. Their first project is the animated series, 'Selase's Adventures'. The launch event featured a private screening of the series’ first episode. Adhavan Adityan, COO of Afrotoons, stated the launch signals African stories are now boldly stepping onto the global stage. This represents a significant move for content originating from the continent.

The launch event attracted many important guests. These included cultural leaders, diplomats, and stakeholders from Africa’s creative and development sectors. Kafui Danku-Pitcher, CEO of Ghana's National Film Authority, was present. Carl Ampah, National Programme Officer for Culture at UNESCO, also attended. Donya Eldridge from the U.S. Embassy Ghana was there. Their attendance highlights growing cross-sector interest. This interest focuses on Africa’s creative economy. Governments and international institutions are aligning with private sector innovators.

Afrotoons' leadership sees this mission as deeply personal. Ama Adi Dako-Seidu, Chief Content Officer, shared her past experience. She noted that her early characters were not Ghanaian names. This reflected a gap in representation for African children in media. Esther Ohrt Paul, Co-Founder and CEO, recalled growing up without seeing any African cartoons. She identified this as a gap in storytelling and imagination. Afrotoons aims to fill this void. It seeks to create content by Africans for Africans and the world.

The studio enters a global children’s content market valued at over $100 billion. African stories are currently underrepresented in this space. Afrotoons plans to bridge this gap. They will produce culturally rich, educational, and entertaining content. This content is intended for both African audiences and the global diaspora. Their flagship series, 'Selase's Adventures,' is for children aged 4-7. The series follows a young explorer named Selase. He travels across Africa learning about cultures and traditions. Season 1 will have 13 episodes. Initial episodes are already in production. A full season rollout is planned for 2026. The series will initially debut on YouTube. This is part of Afrotoons’ digital-first distribution strategy. The studio plans to expand to its own platform later.

Afrotoons is positioning itself at the forefront of a new wave of African media companies. These companies are built for global audiences from their inception. The launch event facilitated networking. Creators, policymakers, investors, and cultural leaders connected. This sets the stage for future collaborations and expansion. The company's plans involve building a significant presence in the global children's entertainment sector.
