The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) has delivered 350 laptops to the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council. This marks the launch of the first phase of the 'One Million Coders' program in the region. The initiative aims to impart crucial computer coding skills to the local population.

These laptops are designated for use in seven training centers located across seven districts. Each center will receive 50 laptops pre-loaded with coding software. This setup is designed to support a comprehensive information technology training effort.

The program aligns with Ghana's broader vision for digital inclusion and economic development. Similar initiatives have been launched in other regions to address a growing demand for skilled tech workers. The government has previously allocated significant funds, like GHS100 million, to programs aimed at boosting youth employment through digital skills training. This effort contributes to building a more tech-savvy workforce, essential for modern economic growth.

Charles Lwanga Puozuing, the Upper West Regional Minister, stated that the program will begin with 50 registered individuals at each center. He encouraged interested Ghanaians to register through the online portal. Balifiama Jackalia, the Upper West Regional Manager for GIFEC, emphasized the program's inclusive nature. It welcomes students, workers, and traders. Even the elderly are encouraged to participate.

Training sessions will be held at flexible times to accommodate different schedules. Morning, afternoon, and evening classes are planned. This approach ensures that working individuals can still access the training. Registration is open to any Ghanaian willing to learn coding skills.

The distribution of these laptops represents an investment in human capital development. By providing access to technology and training, GIFEC and its partners seek to empower citizens. This can lead to increased employment opportunities and foster innovation within the region. The program's success could serve as a model for future digital literacy projects across Ghana.
