Ghana will establish one of the world's largest gold refineries, announced GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi. This new facility will boast a processing capacity of 600 tonnes. The project aims to transform Ghana into a major gold processing hub in Africa. GoldBod expects to begin construction of this refinery later in 2026. The company anticipates completing the project by 2027. This initiative supports the government's broader strategy to enhance Ghana's position in the global gold market. Ghana has been Africa's largest gold producer since 2019, surpassing South Africa. The country produced 4.7 million ounces of gold in 2023. Despite this, a significant portion of Ghana's gold leaves the country for refining elsewhere. This new refinery addresses the long-standing national goal of increasing local value addition to raw materials. Data from the Bank of Ghana frequently highlights the economic benefits of processing raw commodities domestically. Mr. Gyamfi revealed these plans during a meeting with the National House of Chiefs in the Ashanti Region. He stated, “It’s going to be a 600-tonne capacity refinery.” Mr. Gyamfi added that GoldBod is finalizing a new agreement for the project. This agreement forms a crucial part of the plan to establish this significant refinery in Ghana. This refinery will process all gold mined in Ghana. It will also refine gold from neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso and Togo. This regional approach could establish Ghana as a central refining service provider in West Africa. Such a development would further integrate Ghana into regional commodity value chains. The project carries significant economic implications for Ghana. It will likely boost the country’s mining sector by providing local processing solutions. This will reduce reliance on foreign refineries. The refinery's operation will also create numerous jobs, both directly and indirectly. These jobs will span across construction, operations, logistics, and related support services. Increased value addition from gold refining will enhance Ghana's export earnings. This supports government efforts to improve the country's balance of trade. Investors and policymakers will watch the progress of this project closely. Its success could encourage similar value-addition initiatives in other sectors.
