The government has revoked mining leases held by Adamus Resources Limited. The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources made this announcement on April 26. Three specific leases for Akango, Salman, and Nkroful are affected. The decision stems from serious violations of Ghana’s mining laws.

Investigations by the Minerals Commission revealed multiple breaches. Adamus Resources Limited unlawfully sub-contracted mining operations. They did this without government approval. This violates Section 14 of the Minerals and Mining Act. The company also conducted mining without approved plans or permits. This contravenes Regulation 8(1) of the Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations. Furthermore, necessary approvals from the Environmental Protection Authority were not obtained. This breaks Section 18 of Act 703.

These actions fit a broader concern about illegal mining, known as 'galamsey'. The involvement of foreign nationals, specifically Chinese nationals, in these activities is a major issue. This directly breaks Section 99(5)(a) and (b) of the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019. The mining operations were substandard. They occurred outside designated areas near approved infrastructure. This led to significant environmental damage. Land was disturbed and ecosystems were destroyed. Risks to water bodies and public health increased.

The Minister accepted the Minerals Commission's recommendation. Revocation is in the public interest. It specifically addresses cases where mineral rights enable illegal mining. The decision is made under Section 100(2) of Act 703. This highlights the government's stance against such violations. Adamus Resources Limited's mining rights are now cancelled. This is to safeguard Ghana's natural resources.

This revocation may lead to criminal charges. These could be against the company, its directors, and management. This is under the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019. The government is committed to holding those responsible accountable. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources will address job impacts. They plan to protect affected workers' livelihoods. Further support measures will be announced soon. The government reaffirms its commitment to protecting national resources.
