One person died and nine are missing after a chemical blast at a paper factory in Washington. The incident happened on Tuesday evening at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging plant. Nine other people suffered injuries. The explosion occurred at 7:15 PM Pacific Time. This was 3:15 PM Greenwich Mean Time.

The blast was caused by a tank holding "white liquor." This is a strong, corrosive chemical. It is used to make paper. The company confirmed this in a statement. Firefighters say the damaged tank is still not stable. This makes recovery work very difficult and dangerous. Eight workers were hurt. One firefighter also sustained injuries. Their conditions range from minor to severe. Some have burn injuries. Others have trouble breathing.

This event highlights risks in heavy industry. Paper mills use many chemicals. In July 2023, this same plant had a large fire. Wood piles burned for days. The Nippon Dynawave plant makes many paper products. These include tissues, cups, and cartons. It employs 1,000 workers. This explosion comes as another chemical tank in California was secured. That tank threatened to explode and required an evacuation of 50,000 people.

Cowlitz Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein confirmed the fatalities and injuries. He mentioned to reporters that the scene was stable. He advised the public to avoid the area. State ecology workers have joined local officials. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson expressed his sorrow. He sent condolences to the families. He also thanked the first responders.

The company statement noted "multiple critical injuries." Officials have not released names of victims. They are waiting to inform families first. The investigation into the explosion's cause is ongoing. The unstable tank creates hazards for emergency personnel. Reinforcements are being added to stabilize the site. This is needed before more recovery can happen.

The plant holds significant amounts of chemicals. Officials initially thought the tank had 80,000 gallons of white liquor. They later revised this to about 900,000 gallons. Nearly 90,000 gallons may still be inside the damaged container. The fire is not a threat to the wider community. The recovery phase is continuing. The company produces paper goods for many uses.
