Taiwan has insisted it is a sovereign, independent nation. This comes after United States President Donald Trump advised caution regarding a formal declaration of independence from China. Trump stated he has made no commitment on how the US would respond. China views Taiwan as its own territory. Beijing has not ruled out taking the island by force.
President Trump made these remarks after a summit in Beijing. He spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump also mentioned he would soon decide on an $8 billion package of weapons for Taiwan. The US is legally required to help Taiwan defend itself. This must be balanced with diplomatic ties with China. Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te has stated the island is already sovereign. He believes formal independence is unnecessary. Presidential spokesperson Karen Kuo echoed this sentiment. She said it is "self-evident" that Taiwan is a "sovereign, independent democratic country." However, Taiwan remains committed to the current status quo with China. This means Taiwan neither declares independence nor unites with China.
Many people in Taiwan see themselves as a separate nation. Most citizens prefer to maintain the current situation. Washington's official policy does not support Taiwanese independence. Continued ties with Beijing depend on accepting there is only one Chinese government. President Trump told Fox News that US policy on Taiwan has not changed. He stressed he does not seek conflict with Beijing. "I'm not looking to have somebody go independent," Trump said. He added that he does not want the US to fight a war 9,500 miles away. He desires de-escalation from both sides.
During his flight back to Washington, Trump told reporters he discussed Taiwan extensively with President Xi. He declined to say if the US would defend the island. Trump stated Xi "feels very strongly" about Taiwan. "He doesn't want to see a movement for independence," Trump reported. Beijing has often expressed disapproval of Taiwan's leader. They have called him a "troublemaker." China has increased military exercises around Taiwan. This has raised regional tensions. These actions test the careful balance maintained by Washington.
Trump indicated the arms package would be discussed with Taiwan's leadership. He noted he needs to speak with the current leader of Taiwan. The US does not have formal relations with Taiwan. However, it maintains significant unofficial ties. US presidents traditionally do not speak directly to Taiwan's leader. Doing so could significantly strain relations with Beijing. Taiwan's presidential spokesperson expressed gratitude. "Our nation is grateful to President Trump for his continued support for security in the Taiwan Strait," the spokesperson said. Taiwan plans to strengthen cooperation with the US. This aims to achieve peace through strength. It will ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Such stability serves the shared interests of Taiwan, the US, and the global democratic community.
