UPSA Conference Highlights ESG Importance for Africa's Global Trade

    The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) hosted its 11th International Conference on Business Management and Entrepreneurial Development (ICBMED). The event brought together entrepreneurs, academics, and industry leaders. They discussed the future of business in Africa through the lens of ESG and sustainability.

    The two-day conference ran from May 25–26 on UPSA’s campus in Madina, Accra. Its theme was “ESG & Sustainability in Focus: What Does It Mean for Africa and Global Trade?”. This event marked the 11th year of ICBMED. It has become a key platform for connecting academic research with practical business solutions in Ghana.

    UPSA Vice Chancellor Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor opened the conference. He reflected on the programme’s journey and growing influence. Prof. Mawutor stated that ICBMED has distinguished itself as a respected platform for research and dialogue. The conference has influence national and regional conversations. These include economic resilience and digital transformation. It also promotes access to industry-responsive education. This includes green skills training.

    Prof. Mawutor emphasized that ESG and sustainability are now central to business competitiveness. They are crucial for attracting investment and maintaining regulatory credibility. They are also vital for workforce preparedness. Effective participation in the global trading system depends on these factors. He argued that Africa can no longer treat sustainability as a minor issue. It is now a matter of necessity for global trade.

    The conference featured panels and workshops. These examined how African firms can integrate ESG principles. They also explored how to do this without slowing growth. Discussions covered how investors use sustainability metrics. This guides capital flows into the region. The event aimed to connect theory with practice.

    Speakers included Prof. Alexander Perko of UPSA. Mr. Elikem Kotoko from the Forestry Commission also spoke. Mr. Humphrey Tetteh, President of the Association of African Sustainability Practitioners, participated. Clara Pinkrah-Sam, CEO of Clatural Academy, was a speaker. Mr. Alex Osei Mensah of Hollard Insurance and Mr. Abdulsalam Alhassan from Wholesale & Investment Banking were present. Mr. Ade Adebajo, CEO of Springfield Global, also contributed.

    The conference underscored the need for collaboration. Universities, industry, and governments must work together. This collaboration is essential for Africa’s competitive and responsible participation in the global economy. GCB Bank was the headline sponsor for the event.
