Ghana's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has urged the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, to close or relocate the livestock market at Kanda. The committee cited growing concerns over sanitation, congestion, and the orderly development of Accra due to the market's expansion.

The market, located near the National Mosque, has seen a significant increase in the trade of cattle, goats, and other animals. This uncontrolled growth is negatively impacting the capital's urban planning and overall image. The PAC believes this situation requires immediate action from city authorities.

This issue reflects a broader challenge in Ghana concerning the management of informal markets and urban sprawl. Accra often grapples with unorganised commercial activities conflicting with urban development plans. Past efforts to beautify the capital have faced setbacks due to such unregulated growth.

Davis Opoku Ansah, Vice Chairman of the PAC and MP for Mpraeso, expressed significant worry over the situation. He noted that authorities allowed this business to grow unchecked. Mr. Ansah criticised the transformation of the location into a large animal trading hub.

The market started with a small number of animals but now boasts over 100 cows, according to Mr. Ansah. He also observed the sale of camels, indicating a broader range of livestock. He highlighted that this area is central to Accra and should not deteriorate into an unregulated market.

The committee's call suggests potential enforcement actions from the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council. Decision-makers will need to balance the livelihoods of traders with urban planning and public health concerns. The market's future will likely involve stakeholder consultations and careful policy implementation.

This situation could lead to new urban management strategies for informal markets across Accra. It also draws attention to the need for stricter adherence to city development regulations. The economic impact on livestock traders, if relocated, will be a critical consideration.

The Public Accounts Committee wants city authorities to act swiftly. They aim to restore order in the area and protect Accra's urban development plans. The outcome of this call will determine the immediate future of the Kanda livestock market and potentially influence similar markets.
