Ghana and the United States are exploring opportunities for cooperation in data centre development, cloud computing and cybersecurity. The discussions took place during a meeting between Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George and a US Embassy delegation led by Faris Asad.

The potential partnerships involve global technology companies, including Amazon and its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The discussions covered possible cooperation in skills development, technology training and research, with an emphasis on ensuring that investment in the digital sector creates opportunities for Ghanaians. The government is seeking to attract strategic technology investments and expand the country’s digital economy.

Ghana is positioning itself as a destination for technology investment in Africa, with digital infrastructure, skilled labour and geographical location as potential advantages.

The engagement comes as Ghana seeks to improve its digital economy, with the government highlighting the need to extend 5G connectivity beyond major urban centres, improve access to affordable entry-level smartphones and strengthen local expertise in cybersecurity and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. The visit was primarily intended to introduce Asad to the minister ahead of his assumption of the ambassadorial role.

According to Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, the discussions with the US Embassy delegation were fruitful, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening Ghana-US relations in digital technology, cybersecurity, investment and innovation. The delegation included outgoing Chargé d’Affaires Rolf Olson, Economic Counsellor Andrew G. Winkelman, Commercial Counsellor Rachel Kreissl and Regional Environment, Science, Health and Technology Chief Anthony Eterno.

The potential partnerships could lead to significant investments in Ghana’s digital economy, with potential benefits for job creation, skills development and economic growth. The government is seeking to create opportunities for Ghanaians in the digital sector, with a focus on ensuring that investment in the sector creates opportunities for local businesses and individuals.
